The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) says its investments in Nigeria’s healthcare sector have saved the country more than $200 million in foreign exchange by reducing dependence on overseas medical treatment while expanding access to world-class cancer and diagnostic services.

The Authority said its healthcare intervention, driven through its subsidiary, NSIA Advanced Medical Services Limited (MedServe), has transformed specialised healthcare delivery by establishing oncology and diagnostic centres across the country, improving access to affordable treatment and strengthening Nigeria’s medical capacity.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NSIA, Aminu Umar-Sadiq, said the Authority’s healthcare strategy goes beyond building hospitals to creating a sustainable healthcare ecosystem through infrastructure development, human capital investment, clinical research and international partnerships.

At the centre of this strategy is the MedServe-LUTH Cancer Centre in Lagos, commissioned in 2019, which became Nigeria’s first oncology facility to provide 3D Conformal Radiotherapy and now houses the largest concentration of radiotherapy equipment in West Africa.

According to NSIA, the centre has delivered over 25,000 radiotherapy sessions and 10,000 chemotherapy treatments to about 15,000 patients since inception.

The facility also played a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic when international travel restrictions disrupted access to cancer treatment abroad.

The Authority added that treatment costs at the centre are less than half the cost of comparable services overseas, with some Nigerian patients now being referred home from foreign healthcare providers due to the quality and affordability of services.

NSIA also highlighted the impact of the MedServe Kano Diagnostic Centre and MedServe Umuahia Diagnostic Centre, which have provided advanced radiology and pathology services to more than 410,000 patients as of December 2025, supporting early diagnosis and improved clinical outcomes.

To strengthen Nigeria’s oncology ecosystem, MedServe has launched an annual Oncology Summit and partnered with leading global institutions, including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, University of Maryland Medical Center, and Bio Ventures for Global Health.

It has also participated in two international cancer clinical trials focused on prostate and breast cancer.

As part of its next phase of expansion, NSIA said MedServe is developing 13 new diagnostic centres, three oncology centres and three cardiac catheterisation laboratories across 13 states, including Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna, Oyo, Sokoto, Delta and Yobe.

The expansion is supported by up to $24.3 million in blended financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the International Development Association (IDA), alongside long-term partnerships with Siemens and GE for equipment supply, maintenance and specialist training.

NSIA said the initiative reflects its long-term commitment to building a resilient healthcare system capable of delivering high quality, affordable and accessible specialised medical care to Nigerians while reducing outbound medical tourism.
