Nigerian credit rating agency, DataPro Limited, has secured regulatory approval to provide credit rating services in The Gambia, marking an expansion of Nigeria’s financial services expertise into another West African market.

The approval by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of The Gambia is expected to position the company to provide independent credit assessments to businesses and financial institutions seeking to strengthen their credit profiles and access financing.

The expansion comes as The Gambia seeks to deepen its financial market and address challenges limiting access to long term financing.

The country’s financial sector remains relatively small and bank-dominated, with information gaps and elevated credit risks constraining financial intermediation, particularly for longer-term investments.

DataPro’s entry could therefore provide an additional source of independent credit information to support lending and investment decisions in the market.

Credit ratings assess the ability of borrowers, companies and financial institutions to meet their financial obligations, helping lenders and investors evaluate risks before committing funds.

Although ratings do not guarantee access to financing, they provide an additional layer of information for assessing creditworthiness.

The company’s potential client base includes licensed commercial banks and businesses seeking to communicate their financial standing to prospective lenders and investors.

As part of its expansion strategy, DataPro also plans to release its Gambia Banking Risk Outlook 2027 in the first quarter of next year.

The report is expected to examine developments in the country’s banking industry, focusing on asset quality, capital adequacy, liquidity, profitability and other factors influencing the financial health of banks.

These indicators are particularly relevant as financial institutions navigate macroeconomic pressures and changing credit conditions that could affect borrowers’ repayment capacity and the quality of their loan portfolios.

Beyond its immediate commercial prospects, DataPro’s entry into The Gambia highlights the potential for Nigerian financial services companies to expand their expertise across African markets as regional financial integration gathers momentum.

The development also reflects the growing importance of credible credit information in markets seeking to mobilise private capital, improve risk assessment and create a more predictable financing environment.

For DataPro, the success of the expansion will ultimately depend on its ability to establish market confidence, build relationships with local financial institutions and demonstrate the practical value of independent credit assessments in supporting the country’s evolving financial system.
