The Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, has been elected Chairman of the Association of African Accountants-General at the body’s Annual General Meeting held in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
Ogunjimi won the election with a commanding 83 per cent of the votes cast, defeating candidates from Tanzania and The Gambia, who secured 11 per cent and six per cent respectively.
His election is seen as a major endorsement of Nigeria’s growing influence in public financial management across the continent and recognition of the country’s ongoing reforms aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and efficiency in public sector financial administration.
As chairman, Ogunjimi is expected to provide strategic leadership for the association by fostering greater collaboration among member countries, promoting best practices in public financial management and strengthening institutional capacity across Africa.
The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, in a statement issued on Friday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Bawa Mokwa, described the election as a vote of confidence in Ogunjimi’s leadership, professional competence and commitment to improving public financial management across the continent.
The office also expressed confidence that his tenure would deepen cooperation among African nations and further advance sound financial governance across the region.
