Professor Uche Uwaleke has pledged to strengthen collaboration between academia, government, regulators and industry to support Nigeria’s economic transformation following his re-election as President of the Capital Market Academics of Nigeria (CMAN).

Uwaleke was returned unopposed for a second two-year term at the association’s Second Biennial Conference in Abuja, where members also elected a new executive council to oversee the affairs of the body.

Speaking after his re-election, Uwaleke described the renewed mandate as a call to deepen the association’s contribution to the development of Nigeria’s capital market and the broader economy through research-driven policy engagement.

“As President of CMAN, I reaffirm our commitment to serving as a trusted bridge between academia, government, regulators and industry. We are ready to provide independent research, policy advice and intellectual support for Nigeria’s economic transformation,” he said.

He said the association would continue to leverage the expertise of its members to support ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s capital market while promoting research that addresses emerging challenges in the financial sector.

Uwaleke stressed that stronger collaboration between academics and industry practitioners would improve policy formulation, enhance market efficiency and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

“Let this conference be remembered not merely for the awards and papers presented, but for the practical commitments made. If we strengthen the handshake between academia and practice, we will strengthen our financial institutions. And if we strengthen our financial institutions, we will strengthen Nigeria’s economy,” he added.

He also congratulated recipients of the association’s Fellowship Awards, describing the honours as recognition of their contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s financial system.

The conference, which attracted academics, regulators, policymakers and capital market operators, also elected Prof. Seth Akutson as First Vice President, Dr. Mohammed Hussein as Second Vice President and George Ibekwe as General Secretary/Legal Adviser, alongside other members of the executive council.

Established as a professional body, CMAN promotes research, knowledge sharing and policy advocacy aimed at advancing Nigeria’s money and capital markets. Since becoming fully operational in 2021, the association has organised conferences and webinars, launched its Capital Market Journal and expanded partnerships with key institutions in the financial sector.

A key objective of the association is to bridge the gap between academic research and industry practice by encouraging collaboration among universities, regulators and market operators, including creating sabbatical opportunities for academics in corporate organisations and regulatory institutions.
