Nigeria moved closer to petrol self-sufficiency in May 2026 as domestic refineries supplied nearly 88 per cent of the country’s daily Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) demand.

Data contained in the May 2026 Factsheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) on Thursday showed that local refineries produced an average of 44.7 million litres of petrol per day against national consumption of 46.3 million litres daily.

The report showed that domestic refineries produced an average of 44.7 million litres of petrol daily in May, while national consumption stood at 46.3 million litres per day, indicating that local production was sufficient to meet most of the country’s fuel requirements.

The development comes as the country’s refining sector recorded a significant performance boost, with average refinery capacity utilisation rising to 101.25 per cent during the month.

The NMDPRA data also showed that domestic refineries supplied 41.5 million litres of petrol to the local market daily and maintained closing stocks of 9.4 million litres.

Beyond petrol, domestic refineries produced 24.5 million litres of diesel daily and supplied 18.2 million litres to the domestic market, while also exporting 6.5 million litres per day. Aviation fuel production stood at 21.9 million litres daily, with exports reaching 17.5 million litres per day.

The report further showed that average daily supply of petrol in May stood at 47.4 million litres, slightly above the estimated national demand benchmark of 50 million litres per day.

Fuel availability remained stable during the month, with the country holding sufficient stocks to cover 16 days of petrol consumption, 31 days of diesel demand and 94 days of aviation fuel requirements.

In the gas sector, total gas supply averaged 4.984 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bscf/d), with 2.851 Bscf/d supplied to the Nigeria LNG Limited and 2.133 Bscf/d delivered to the domestic market.

The report also showed that LPG supply averaged 4,100 metric tonnes per day, while consumption exceeded supply at 4,500 metric tonnes daily. Retail cooking gas prices ranged between N1,100 and N1,800 per kilogram during the month.
