The Federal Government has said it has released funds for payment of withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU).
Confirming this in a statement through the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) in Abuja, the Federal Government disclosed it has also released funds for payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS)
Bawa Mokwa, Director Press and Public Relations OAGF who signed the document said payments to the Non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities had commenced and many have confirmed receipt.
The Office reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to efficiently cater for the well being of Nigerian workers and retirees.
Recall that the Joint Action Committee, (JAC) of two non-teaching staff unions(NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU) had embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday following the expiration of the ultimatum they gave to the government on the withheld salaries. When talks with the Federal Government failed, they insisted that until they got an alert on the withheld salaries, the industrial action would continue.
Similarly, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector, NUPCPS early this week accused the Federal Government of not paying retirement benefits to workers who retired from the Contributory Pension Scheme, CPS, about 20 months ago (March, 2023 till date). While pleading with the Federal Government to release funds for the payment of accrued rights portion of retirees’ pension benefits, the union through its National Chairman also urged the Federal Government to pay N32,000 pension increment to pensioners. He accused the OAGF of not releasing funds for payment of the accrued rights as appropriated by the National Assembly in the 2023 and 2024 budgets.
