The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to open governance, accountability and youth inclusion in the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
The Minister of Youth Development and Global OGP Co-Chair, Ayodele Olawande, gave the assurance during a dinner by the OGP office and the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE), to mark the conclusion of a visit by the OGP CEO Aidan Eyakuze and the incoming Global Chair Ms. Stephanie Muchai in Abuja.
The leadership of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) paid a high-level country visit to Nigeria from 27th to 31st July 2025, led by both Mr Aidan Eyakuze and Ms. Stephanie Muchai. The strategic mission comes as Nigeria prepares its Fourth National Action Plan (NAP IV: 2025–2029), and is aimed at deepening political commitment, civil society engagement, and international support for the country’s open government reforms.
Ayodele Olawande Minister of Youth Development, in his submission said instilling strong values, value-driven leadership, and civic consciousness in the country’s youths was key to building a stronger and more united nation.
He said the President Bola Tinubu administration was implementing inclusive reforms which also accommodates the youth.
“We can only make reforms if we look at the future, not the present. And we are excited to build on the OGP framework to sustain and improve these reforms.
“We believe that young people have an important role to play in shaping the future of any country,” Olawande said.
Nigeria is a recognized OGP leader in beneficial ownership, fiscal transparency, and civic space reforms;
The minister assured that Nigeria is very ready to honour its part of this global agreement.
in his submission, former Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Mr Clem Agba, said the OGP which recognisestransparency and stability needs proper funding to thrive.
“As a country, we cannot continue to depend on others to perform activities if truly we believe in co-creation.
With the current administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, this is viewed by the partnership as a critical moment to align national reforms with global accountability standards to which Agba commended President Tinubu for his leadership and reforms.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) OGP Global Support Unit, Mr Aiden Eyakuze, said civil society engagement through the OGP platform has proven to be a vital mechanism for regular interaction between ministries and non-state actors.
” The role of the OGP secretariat have been invaluable, without their support, we would not have achieved the milestones we celebrate today.
“We must acknowledge and thank our elders and stakeholders whose wisdom continues to guide us,” Eyakuze said.
The visit spotlighted how the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) is facilitating the translation of national OGP commitments into tangible subnational reforms. As a UK International Development-funded programme, PACE has become a key technical partner in supporting the co-creation and implementation of reforms aligned with OGP’s principles of transparency, accountability, and citizen participation—particularly in states such as Kaduna, Kano, and Jigawa.
The visit also showcased how Nigeria is leveraging OGP as a delivery platform for national priorities such as anti-corruption, service delivery, climate action, and digital governance. In this regard, PACE’s contributions to institutional strengthening, inclusive reform dialogue, and accountability mechanisms have been instrumental in advancing the OGP agenda at both national and subnational levels.
