Of the three subjects mentioned above, most of us have either the least knowledge of one or the most ignorance of one.

In a random survey amongst 200 persons, I found out that over 50 percent were readily available to discuss their culture, 38 percent would discuss their religion, then 10 percent could discuss insurance while the remaining were not interested in discussing any of the subjects.

Not many people who discussed insurance knew anything of its ability to create and protect wealth. The only thing they knew was that insurance is a law that one needs to comply with. They didn’t even know that there’s a claim to make when something went wrong. For example, they just go to their mechanic to fix their vehicles when an accident occurs before remembering that they had an insurance policy covering it. That’s how bad it is. And guess what? Ignorance is the issue!

Unlike religion and culture, which people are more knowledgeable about, insurance is seen as a subject that’s evolving and requires more awareness and education. Of course, every subject requires awareness and education in view of the dynamism of our world today, the presentation of these subjects matter.

Insurance is often presented as a social responsibility and a business with focus on profitability thus confusing people who come into contact with it including its sales representatives.

Certainly not the case with religion and culture. An attempt to showcase insurance as the other subjects would most likely endear more people to it; afterall, in terms of inflow, the other subjects make even more than insurance.

Quite often, what’s seen to be missing is the ability of the insurance practitioners to cause a sustainable “problems and solutions” syndrome. However, the real issue is the ignorance of the populace on the value of insurance to their everyday livelihoods.

The more ignorance is removed from the way of attracting more people to these subjects, the more people understand them and therefore create and recreate the way to the better experiences insurance offers.

Kicking ignorance out of insurance in Nigeria and Africa could be the way to go as the other subjects have approached people or fulfilling more of the promises made could just be the answer insurance has to surpass others in terms of impact.

When the focus is on kicking ignorance out of insurance through the deliberate actions others have used, we can talk about deepening the reach.

Hopefully, many of us will know that we have what it takes to develop, operate and own systems, which enable us to collaborate and excel.

Your comments and questions are welcomed.
