The Federal Government has unveiled digital platforms for the Office of the Tax Ombud as part of ongoing efforts to improve taxpayer protection, dispute resolution and transparency in Nigeria’s tax administration system.
The platforms include an official website, a toll-free call centre and a case management system aimed at providing taxpayers with easier access to complaint resolution and mediation services.
Speaking during the launch, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, described the initiative as a major milestone in Nigeria’s fiscal reform journey.
According to him, the platforms are designed to ensure fairness, accountability and trust in the nation’s tax system.
“A modern tax system must be built not only on efficient revenue collection, but also on fairness, accountability, transparency and trust,” Oyedele said.
He noted that taxpayers must have confidence that disputes would be resolved fairly and efficiently through accessible and affordable mechanisms.
Oyedele added that the virtual platforms would leverage technology to reduce administrative bottlenecks and make dispute resolution easier for taxpayers across the country at no cost.
He said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader tax reform agenda focused on simplifying tax administration, protecting taxpayer rights and encouraging voluntary compliance.
Also speaking, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, urged Nigerians to support the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The minister said the administration’s policies were already yielding positive economic results, including increased revenue generation and improved investor confidence.
He pledged that the Ministry of Information and National Orientation would support efforts to create public awareness about the responsibilities of the Tax Ombud Office.
Earlier, Tax Ombud and Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Tax Ombud, John Nwabueze, said the office was established under the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria Establishment Act, 2025.
Nwabueze explained that the institution was created to promote fairness, transparency and accountability in tax administration while strengthening public trust in government institutions.
He said taxpayers would now be able to lodge complaints online or through the toll-free call centre, monitor cases in real time and access professional mediation services digitally.
“Our vision is simple but transformative. Every Nigerian taxpayer, regardless of location, income level or business size, should have access to fair hearing and efficient redress mechanisms,” he said.
Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Olusegun Adesokan, said the office would provide support for taxpayers, especially vulnerable citizens who may not be able to afford legal representation in tax disputes.
He added that the initiative would strengthen public confidence in the tax system and promote voluntary tax compliance.
Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, said the Tax Ombud initiative formed part of wider reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration to build a fair and efficient tax system.
Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, also commended the initiative, describing it as consistent with ongoing efforts to build a digital, responsive and citizen-focused public service.
She urged the Office of the Tax Ombud to ensure the platforms remain active, transparent and responsive to taxpayers’ needs.
