Signs of internal strain have emerged at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), after the regulator confirmed that it moved to contain what it described as an attempt to discredit its leadership from within.

The Commission disclosed that the incident, which involved “certain individuals” allegedly working with external actors, was swiftly neutralised after staff declined to support the move, preventing any escalation.

While NAICOM insisted that operations remain stable, the disclosure highlights simmering tensions within the agency, coming amid ongoing efforts by management to reposition the institution and reinforce internal governance.

The Commission said it had since restored normalcy, stressing that the situation did not disrupt its regulatory activities.

However, in what appeared to be a direct response to internal dissatisfaction, NAICOM urged employees to rely on established communication and dispute resolution channels rather than actions that could undermine institutional credibility.

“Staff are encouraged to make use of established internal mechanisms for communication and dispute resolution,” the Commission stated, warning against conduct that could erode public confidence.

The regulator also used the opportunity to defend its labour practices, insisting that its human resource system is anchored on transparency, merit, and strict adherence to public service rules.

According to the Commission, promotion and career advancement processes are based on “clear, objective, and verifiable criteria,” with no tolerance for favouritism or bias.

NAICOM further highlighted improvements in staff welfare, including training, workplace conditions, and performance-based progression, as part of efforts to build a more efficient and motivated workforce.

Industry observers say such internal disruptions, even when contained, can test confidence in regulatory institutions, particularly in a sector like insurance where credibility and stability are critical.

Despite this, NAICOM maintained that it remains focused on its core mandate of regulating and strengthening Nigeria’s insurance industry, adding that discipline, accountability, and professionalism continue to guide its operations.
